Welcome to Central Hub Brighton. We bring together the pupil referral units and The Connected Hub for the City of Brighton and Hove.
We have four provisions based over three sites each with their own distinct identity but with shared values and ethos. Each provides a base for a specific age group of pupils; primary PRU, key stage 3 PRU, key stage 4 PRU and The Connected Hub (which is a year 11 alternative provision). We are in the early days of our collaboration and are enjoying the benefits for students and staff of working together to achieve our vision. We are strongly united in our belief in an attachment aware and trauma informed approach. Through collaboration, celebration and challenge, we believe our provision can become outstanding and that pupils can be given every opportunity to succeed.
Central Hub vision
Our vision as Central Hub Brighton is to nurture, inspire and engage our pupils through an attachment aware and trauma informed approach so that they can achieve to the best of their ability and lead happy and fulfilled lives.

The Connected Hub.
The Connected Hub is a year 11 Pupil Referral Unit (PRU). We are unusual in that pupils are referred to us from all secondary schools in the city and are on roll with us for their entire year 11. Through a focussed curriculum, skilled staff and positive relationships between staff and students we are have created an environment which embraces our approach of ‘a different kind of learning’. We are committed to students making strong progress and achieving positive outcomes. We support students to reengage in education and work towards GCSEs, Functional Skills and onto colleges or apprenticeships post 16.
Primary PRU
The Primary PRU operates as both a short stay school for young people experiencing difficulties at their mainstream schools and a special school provision for students on longer term programmes. We have a strong curriculum focus on learning the core skills of literacy and numeracy together with a cross-curricular themed curriculum for other subjects. We have a strong therapeutic team that support our young people to understand their differences and learn how to make good choices with their learning and relationships. We teach our young people how their brain works and enable them to make good progress.
Key Stage 3
The key stage 3 pupil referral unit is for students in years 7-9 who are at the point of permanent exclusion or need some time away from school to learn new ways to manage their behaviour. Our experienced staff teach elements of the national curriculum and follow modules from this to develop core knowledge, skills and understanding. We work in a therapeutic way to support our students to understand the skills to succeed in the classroom and focus on building their understanding of how they learn. There is access to therapeutic support and a strong emphasis on assessment to ensure that each young person’s learning needs are identified and supported. This information is then shared with their onward placement be it returning to their old school or integrating into a new one.
Key Stage 4
The key stage 4 PRU caters for students in years 10 and 11 and offers short stay and longer term programmes for young people at risk of permanent exclusion. The curriculum is designed to help students reengage in learning and is based on entry level, function skills and full GCSE courses. It has been developed to enable students to continue their learning in a small nurturing environment. Our staff are committed to positive outcomes and helping students re-engage in their learning. Those who do not return to mainstream in year 10 go on to complete their courses in year 11 and are supported into post 16 pathways.
