Eagles Overview

Autumn 1 All about me and Black History – PSHRE and History Focus

In this first half term we will be finding out about each other. We will have a PSHE focus where we will discuss and write about ourselves. Our main focus for the first part of the term will be using Professor Steve Peters ‘The Hidden Chimp’ and ‘Path through the jungle’ to help the children better understand their brains and how our genes and events in our lives affect the choices we make. As part of the we will also look at improving our executive function skills. In our literacy sessions we will create fact files, poems and autobiographies celebrating how marvellous we are.

We will then move on to celebrate Black History Month. We will use our ICT skills to research and learn about key figures in Black History and the present day along with learning about racism and how we can tackle racism if we witness it. In art, we will design anti-racism posters and t shirts and send entries to an anti – racism competition.

Autumn 2 Oceans – Geography Focus

In the second half of the Autumn term, we are going to be exploring oceans and learning all about how to look after our world. We will look at the impact that plastic has on our oceans and learn about how we can ‘Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.’

We will read a variety of picture books, including David Wiesner’s Flotsam, which we will use to inspire our writing. We will be focussing on descriptive writing in underwater worlds. We will also be writing non-chronological reports about ocean creatures.

In art and DT, we will design our own boats and sea creatures from recyclable and non-recyclable materials.

Spring 1 Authors and illustrators – English Focus

At the beginning of the Spring term, we will be reading books by the author Tom Percival. We will use the characters in our books to continue our work on the ‘inner chimp’ and look at Adverse Childhood Experiences. Through the wonderful stories children will write letters of advice to the characters and eventually write their own version of one of the stories that the children will illustrate and we will hopefully publish.

In art, we will use multi-media and collage to create illustrations for our stories. These stories will then be published and available for parents to buy

Spring 2 Countries: Japan – Geography Focus

This half term, we will be looking at the continents, finding Japan on a map of the world and looking at the country’s cultures, food, physical and man-made features. During our English unit, along with our continued grammar work, we will be looking at writing persuasive leaflets to visit Japan, non-chronological reports, instruction writing (recipes) and instructions for Kabuki make-up/masks.

In art, we will be looking at a variety of Japanese art including Sumi-e ink painting and Manga (comics). In science we will be looking at Circuits and electricity.

Summer 1 Traditional tales – English Focus

After the Easter holiday, we will read a range of traditional tales from Japan. We will write and perform play-scripts from traditional stories and eventually write our own playscripts based on one of the traditional tales. In design and technology, we will design and make puppets for an animation that we will create and record. In science, we will be looking into space and learning about the planets in our solar system and the future of space travel.

Summer 2 The Ancient Egyptians – History Focus

Our final half term has a history focus where we will be travelling back in time to imagine what it was like to live in the time of the Pharaohs.  We will spend some time comparing our lives now to what life was like then. In English, we will be using Horrible Histories to learn about note taking and research. We will also be reading ‘Marcy and the Riddle of the Sphinx by Joe Todd-Stanton and basing our writing on this comic book. We will also be writing instructions on how to prepare a mummy.

In art, we be making mini mummies and painting sarcophaguses to put them in. We will also attempt to make our own papyrus and paint some hieroglyphics on them.
